Soul Eater Fan Fiction - Chapter 10: She Loves Me.  She Loves Me Not.

Note: I didn't think that this warranted a mature rating but I thought I'd mention that there is what could be considered mild sensuality in this chapter.

“Why da I hate Medusa, huh?  Dere are so many reasons!  Where da I start?”  Rael sighed and shook his head.  He’d never really spoken to anyone about this, not even Free and Eruka.  He’d never confessed his hatred out loud.  It felt strange to do it now and especially to someone who wanted to kill him.  Still, strangely enough, it felt good to get it out of his system even if it was only to Giriko.

“Just pick something,” the chainsaw said with a bored shrug.  Suddenly a wicked looking smile crossed his lips and he began to snicker.  “You mentioned more than once how pretty she was and all that.  Did you have a little crush on her?”

Kess glared angrily at his brother.  “It’s not funny!”

“So you did.  That’s priceless!”

“Well… yeah.  So what if I did?”  Rael’s face was red and his hands were trembling.  “I couldn’t help it!  I was fourteen and here was dis gorgeous older lady bein’ nice ta me.  She treated me like I was somethin’ special.  She acted like she was really impressed by my powers and she seemed to genuinely like my company.  Maybe da biggest thing was she didn’t treat me like I was a kid.  She treated me like I was a man.  Hell, she even seemed ta think I was kinda cute.”

Giriko was still chuckling softly.  “So how’d that work out for you?”

His brother made a face and rolled his eyes.  “How’d ya think it went?”

“I think if she was anything like her sister she probably ate that up and continued stringing you along, playing you for sap!”

“Yup.  Dat’s about da size a it.”  The anger slowly began to fade from his face, only to be replaced by a kind of wistful sadness.  “I actually believed she loved me for a while.  She’d flirt and tease me.  She’d let me kiss her, play with her hair, stuff like dat.  Just enough to get me all heated up and den she’d find some excuse ta disappear and leave me hangin’.  Never occurred ta me dat she didn’t really care about me though.  I thought she just didn’t wanna go too far with me ‘cause I was a kid.”

“Did things change when you grew up?”

“Of course not.  She might have found me more attractive.  I dunno.  She’d play around with me more often but it never went anywhere.  She’d just vanish and leave me hangin’, just like when I was a teenager.”

Giriko continued to chuckle as he shook his head.  “Boy, you never change.  You’re still as naïve as ever.  Hasn’t life taught you anything?  She was keeping you loyal.  She wanted to keep you coming back for more.  If she’d put out then you’d have had it all and wouldn’t need to stick around.”

“I know.  I figured it out when I had nothin’ else to think about for five years in prison.”

“So you started to hate her in prison when you figured out what she’d done?”

“Nah, it was before dat.  I started realizin’ dat she didn’t feel anythin’ for me long before dat.  I just didn’t realize why she’d been stringin’ me along.”

“What tipped you off, genius?”

“Da other guys.”

“What other guys?”

“I thought ya didn’t care about dis stuff.”

“I’m just bored waiting for you to get walking again.  Might as well let you finish your stupid story.”

Rael rolled his eyes.  “My best friend, Free and dis professor up at da school.”

“Wait a minute.  Your best friend went out with the woman you wanted for a girlfriend and you still managed to become friends?”

“Free’s such a nice guy dat you couldn’t help but like him.  He never went out with her anyway.  I think she liked his strength… and his body.  Who wouldn’t?  Da guy’s ripped!  He’s pretty naïve though and not da brightest bulb in da chandelier and she seemed to lose all interest when she found dat out.  I was just jealous of da attention she gave him at first.  Pretty quick though it was obvious he meant as little as I did.  Bein’ friends was easy den.”

“Okay but then what about the professor?  I thought she hated Death’s stupid school.  What would she be into a professor for?”

“She met him when she started working dere undercover.  He was brilliant, which appealed to a smart woman like her, but what she was really into was the fact that dis guy was fulla madness.  Everybody was always a little suspicious of da guy and dey kept him on a pretty tight leash.  Guess he had a fetish about cuttin’ things up or somethin’ like dat.  Kinda sounded like a freak show ta me, but she became obsessed with dis dude.  Seemed ta think if dere was ever a man who was her equal and who was worthy to be sittin’ on the throne next ta her when she became empress of evil, it was him.”

“That must have really gotten under your skin.”

“Yeah.   Hearin’ the way she talked about him… well it was so different from da way she’d talked about anybody else before.  I just knew den.  She didn’t love me da way dat I…”  Rael dropped his head onto his chest and went silent.

“Okay.  I get it.  She didn’t love you and all that garbage but is that really why you hate her so much?  If you go that crazy about every girl who isn’t into you…”

“I don’t!  Dat’s not why I hate her anyway.  It’s only part of it.”

Note: Rael's name is pronounced "Ray-el" or basically if you talk fast like he does it just becomes "Rail" like the things trains run on.  It's a name my friend, Life-Of-The-Machine came up with for me.  It could also be a derivative of the name Gayle or Gael, I suppose.

Note #2: If you'd like a better idea of what Rael looks like check out the commissions I had made.

Rael says, "Here's KappaChiyoko's lovely colored version of yours truly!  She's the sweetest thing too!  You're not free tonight, are ya, doll?"

"Let's not forget this awesome one by josephmlee!  Thanks a lot, bro!"

"Oh one more.  This one ain't a commission exactly.  It's from a doll maker, but how cute do I look?  Check it out!"

"Sorry guys and gals but I lied.  Here is one last one.  This one is also a doll-maker one.  Oh and it features my older brother. Last one, I swear!"

I have one other question for everyone.  How do you guys feel about the way I'm writing Rael's speech.  I've been reading about how readers respond to vernacular in other stories and it isn't always favorably.  Many of them think it's better if you just mention at the outset that the character has a particular accent and then remind you of it from time to time throughout the story.  Which way do you guys prefer?
